BASIC INGREDIENTS IN ALL RELAXATION
There is nothing mysterious or mystical about relaxation. It is a natural response of the body that can be triggered by all of us. In and of itself, relaxation does not have spiritual significance, but as we shall see, it can be combined with prayer and meditation to become a powerful spiritual exercise. It is something that should become easier as you practice it. Whichever body system you are trying to relax, the following are the basic steps to relaxation:
SIT OR LIE IN A COMFORTABLE POSITION. Pain or pressure will keep you in an aroused state, so try to minimize discomfort. Loosen tight clothing and remove your glasses. Try to provide support for all the undersides of your body.
ENSURE YOU WON’T BE INTERRUPTED. Lock the door; hang out a sign; unplug the phone; tell your spouse, kids, dogs, and neighbors not to disturb you—or better yet, go where they can’t find you.
SET ASIDE A PREDETERMINED AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE EXERCISE. Thirty to forty-five minutes is ideal. Set an alarm so you won’t have to keep checking the time.
DON’T FALL ASLEEP. Sleeping is not what relaxation is all about. If you need sleep, go ahead and sleep, but don’t confuse sleep with relaxing. Relaxation is a conscious experience, not a trance or sleeplike state. Falling asleep when relaxing is a sign that you probably need more sleep.
REMAIN INACTIVE. Don’t fidget, move, get up, or scratch. At first, you’ll want to do all these because you will be experiencing withdrawal symptoms from the effect of lowered adrenaline, just as when you stop taking a powerful drug. Just put up with the discomfort, and it will pass away. (If you must scratch, return as quickly as possible to the relaxed position.)
AVOID THINKING TROUBLESOME THOUGHTS. Set aside your worries. Cast all your worries and cares aside. Try to detach yourself from your worrisome world for a while and remain free of the demands that press on you.
